Fashion: Get your winter wardrobe all wrapped up

It’s time to wrap up against the cold. Emma Pinch looks at the pick of this season’s coats

AS MUMS all over the country like to mournfully note at this time of year, the nights are drawing in.

Dark, damp evenings, dripping noses and scraping the ice off the car temptingly beckon us towards the winter months, and all this after the wash-out of a summer.

But what better excuse to invest in a new coat than the change in season?

Left: Grey twill military coat, Hobbs, £249; lambswool and angora scarf, £35, Hobbs. Right: Black PVC jacket, £95, Levis

A flattering silhouette from a nicely cut coat covers an ocean of sins, instantly rebalancing chunky hips or legs, bestowing a nipped-in waist on the wearer and providing a cheering splash of colour over regulation black.

Key trends for coats this autumn include tartan, biker jackets, military-style and structured silhouettes with sharply belted waists.

Three-quarter length sleeves are also proving enduringly popular, so stock up on warm knitwear.

THIS week’s shoot was staged in Liverpool’s historic Hope Street and at 60 Hope Street. The Georgian-fronted restaurant serves modern European cuisine and also houses a bistro and private dining room.

Hope Street stretches from the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral to the Anglican Liverpool Cathedral and is home to Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall, LIPA, the Everyman Theatre.

The installation, A Case History, on the junction with Mount Street, features suitcases belonging to the street’s most illustrious names and organisations.

The current Miss Liverpool, Amanda Ball, is this week’s model.
