AS THE winter nights draw in, hair can feel the strain with cold temperatures and central heating all taking their toll. But, with a bit of TLC, it is possible to keep you locks looking luscious.

“Treat your hair like you would your skin,” says Jayne Mahon, artistic director of Andrew Collinge, on Castle Street. “Hair can dehydrate from the seasonal elements and central heating can also be a contributing factor. It’s imperative to keep it moisturised throughout the day with a spritz on leave- in conditioner. Or apply a leave-in conditioning cream to your hair when damp, to lock moisture in throughout the day.”

Jayne should know, as she is the 2008 British Hairdressing Awards North West nominee and the flagship Castle Street salon, at which she is based, has just been named Regional Salon of the Year by Hair Magazine.

“I always think hair in the winter should look more styled and therefore it is important to have a good blow-dry technique,” Jayne adds. “Even for those who enjoy longer hair, a layered haircut can give you so much more variety and is easier to blow-dry. To get a super sleek finish, apply Andrew Collinge Salon Solutions Weightless Volume heat protective styling spray to towel dried hair and blow-dry using a large round brush to create body and a sleek finish.”

When it comes to colour, Jayne says the time is ripe to go all out.

“All over colours are big at the moment; these help to refresh any dull tones. We also offer a treatment called Colour Glossing in our salons and this, teamed with a fabulous blow-dry, is a perfect way to refresh the hair.”
