Sergeant Pepper artist designs beer label for Capital of Culture

LEGENDARY pop artist Sir Peter Blake, who designed the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper album, has used his imagination to promote another home-grown product – Cains beer.

He has produced an exclusive label for beer bottles containing the Liverpool brewers’ Finest Lager.

A limited edition to celebrate Capital of Culture year, it features a Union Jack emblazoned with the city’s name across it as part of promotion proclaiming Liverpool and its ale as the Best of British.

It starts Cains’ support of the city’s Capital of Culture activities as official beer sponsor and will be available nationally throughout the year.

Cains’ joint managing director brothers Sudarghara and Ajmail Dusanj got the idea after seeing Sir Peter and Tracey Emin give a demonstration of their work at Tate Liverpool last year.

“We were impressed so afterwards we went up to him and asked if he would be interested in doing something for us for Capital of Culture year and he said of course!,” said Sudarghara.

“It’s perfect because it not only proclaims our pride in the city but the flag as well.”

Sir Peter, who has previously put his love of the city on record, said: “Cains brewery and its beers are woven into the history and culture of Liverpool. I’m excited about the dynamism that Cains has under its current owners and delighted to be involved in their celebrations during 2008.”
