Liverpool jobless trend points to recovery

Liverpool, which had the second-highest claimant rate in the country at the start of the year, has fallen to fifth, behind Blaenau Gwent, Hull, Wolverhampton and Birmingham.

Nationally, the number of people claiming JSA last month increased by 57,100 to 1,513,000, according to the Office for National Statistics.

It represented a marked slow-down and was the smallest increase for six months.

There were also hopeful signs for UK manufacturers after official figures showed firms had all but stopped the rot, after more than a year of decline.

Manufacturing output fell by a marginal 0.1% between February and March – a 13th successive month of falling output, but the smallest in the current slump.

A sunny and late Easter was credited for retail sales growing at their fastest rate in three years, according to new figures.
