MORE than 60,000 people who descended on the city for the On The Waterfront festival may have pumped up to £2m into the local economy.

The three-day event included a stunning 3D light show which focused on the centenary of the Liver Building.

Originally, the council had estimated around 30,000 people would attend and that they would bring in £1m – but the numbers were actually doubled.

The Reflection event was the first UK outing for Czech visual artists The Macula who specialise in using lights to create images that give the impression of being three-dimensional.

Both the Liver Building and the recently opened Museum of Liverpool were used as backdrops for the displays.

Lantern displays and performances from singer Connie Lush, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and band the 6ix Toys rounded off the festivities.

Council leader Cllr Joe Anderson said: “This event has surpassed all our expectations and I’m delighted that people came out in force to celebrate the centenary of the Liver Buildings and the opening of the new Museum of Liverpool in style.

“We estimated around 30,000 people would come down to the Pier Head so to double that figure is incredible.
