Weather delays work on cruise liner terminal

The cruise landing stage makes its way across the Mersey

BAD weather prevented all four sections of Liverpool’s new cruise liner terminal being towed into place over the weekend.

The main segment, housing the passenger reception area, was towed into place along- side Princes Parade on Friday night.

The aim had been to bring other platforms from the Cammell Laird dry dock during the weekend and yesterday.

Last night the city council said it was hoped that weather conditions would allow the other sections to be put into place today, tomorrow and Thursday.

That would leave enough time for the 1,000ft-long landing stage to be completed and tested before September 21 when the Queen Elizabeth 2 arrives in the Mersey as part of her 40th anniversary tour.

Teams of marine engineers were busy working during the weekend to attach the main segment to the securing piles that have been built into the river bed.

When completed the landing stage will be big enough to enable the world’s biggest liners to visit the Mersey and allow passengers to come ashore.

The aim is to attract dozens of visits a year to Liverpool by the ever-growing cruise liner industry.
