Abandoned baby Zack set to leave hospital

A fresh appeal was today made for the mother of an abandoned baby to come forward as the newborn was fostered.

Tiny Zack was left wrapped in a binbag in a garden nearly a week ago, when he was only an hour old.

The baby, who weighed 8lbs 11oz and was discovered with his umbilical cord still attached, was found in Fazakerley, Liverpool, and christened after the area.

Today, as fears continued for the mother’s health, police urged her to come forward.

Superintendent Colin Leeman of Merseyside Police, said: “We’re concentrating our investigating locally.

“Zack was clearly newborn when found, so there’s a good chance that the mother may live locally or that Zack was born in the area.

“Baby Zack is a very happy and healthy baby, so much so that he is leaving hospital tomorrow.

“Our primary concern is still for Mum, we need her to come forward so we can check on her welfare and make sure she has the medical attention and support she needs.

“If anybody out there has a friend or relative or knows of someone who they think could be the mother of baby Zack please let the police know.”

Zack was cared for by staff at Liverpool Women’s Hospital who described him as loving cuddles.

He was discovered by passersby who initially mistook his cries for cats’ fighting.

A spokesman for Liverpool City Council confirmed the boy was in the care of social services.
