Boy injured after collision with Steven Gerrard's car

Premiership football Steven Gerrard was involved in a traffic collision which left a 10-year-old boy with a suspected broken leg today.

Ten-year-old Jamie Hellawell suffered a broken leg when he was knocked the the ground after hitting the Bentley outside in Birkdale, Southport.

The accident happened near the entrance to Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School where Jamie is a pupil.

He was last night in a stable condition after being transfered from Ormskirk District General Hosptial to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.

The car was travelling along Grantham Road in Birkdale when the incident happened at 3.15pm.

A spokesman for the Liverpool captain said: “Steven was driving very slowly through an area of Birkdale when a young boy ran out and hit the side of his car. Steven comforted the boy until the paramedics arrived.

"There were apparently several eye-witnesses who saw the accident.

“Steven later attended a police station where he produced his driving documents as a matter of routine and made a statement about the accident.

“The Liverpool captain was distressed over the accident and has been in contact with the boy’s family to check his progress and plans to visit him in the next

couple of days.”

One 39-year-old man said: "I didn't see the accident but it seem that he lad just ran out between two parked cars and into the side of Gerrard's car.

"Stevie stopped the car and he talked to the lad as he lay on the ground.

"The ambulance arrived as Stevie was looking quite anxious as they were giving the lad oxygen."

Another added that Gerrard was very upset and added the football star couldn't have prevented the accident.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We are able to confirm that a road traffic accident happened in Grantham Road, Birkdale at 3.15pm when a car was involved in a collision with a pedestrian.

"A 10-year-old boy was was injured and suffered a suspected broken leg.

"The 27-year-old driver of the car stopped following the incident to assist officers with their inquires at the scene.

"Anyone who saw what happened is asked to call 0151 777 6010 with information."

Steven Gerrard lives with his wife Alex, in a detached home in Victoria Road, Freshfield, about eight miles from the scene of the accident.

Liverpool FC are due to face Marseille in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday.
