Police at the scene of the stabbing in Sycamore Road, Tranmere _320
A MAN was being questioned today after a 42-year-old was stabbed to death.
A neighbour said today told how he tried to help the victim, named locally as Graham, after he was found bleeding on a doorstep.
Police were called to Sycamore Road, Tranmere, Wirral, at just after 9.30 last night.
It is believed the dead man may have been involved in a fight.
He was found on a path outside a terraced house with a stab wound to his chest.
A neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I got a call from my girlfriend. She was panicking because he was lying on the doorstep.
“We were taking it in turns to hold dry towels down on his chest because that is what the ambulance was telling us to do.
“He was unconscious. We stayed with him. One of us was on the phone to the ambulance. It turned up and took him away.”
The man was taken to Arrowe Park hospital where he later died.
A 30-year-old man from Birkenhead was arrested last night on suspicion of murder.
He was being questioned at a police station on Merseyside.
Today the road remained cordoned off. Two cars close to the scene were covered with tarpaulin.
Scenes of crimes officers were investigating and police were also carrying out house-to-house inquiries.
Detective inspector Ian Hassall, who is leading the murder probe, said: “We are investigating the chain of eve nts which has resulted in the tragic death of a 42-year-old man.
“At this point in time we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. We would urge anybody who may have witnessed the incident to contact the police.”
