Girl fights for life after being hit by skip wagon

Alder Hey Children's Hospital, West Derby, Liverpool

A six-year-old girl is in hospital with serious injuries after she was hit by a seven and a half-tonne skip wagon.

The girl, who was thought to have been sitting on the pavement when she was injured, was taken to Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s hospital.

The collision happened in Allen Road, Weston Point, Runcorn in Cheshire at around 11.50am yesterday.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “The collision happened when a seven-and-a-half tonne mini-skip wagon was turning out of Allen Road.

“It is believed the wagon collided with the six-year-old girl who was possibly sat on the pavement.

“The six-year-old has sustained serious crush injuries to her pelvis and legs and has been taken to Alder Hey.

“Her family have been informed and are currently with her at the hospital.”

The spokesman would not confirm if the injuries were life threatening.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 11.42am yesterday morning. The girl was originally taken to Whiston Hospital where her condition was stabilised. She had lower limbs and pelvis trauma.”

No further details were released.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 458000.

Residents have described how the truck was transporting a fully-laden skip.

A 44-year-old man who lives near the scene said: “My daughter heard a pop, which was quite loud, from a ball which had been crushed.

“It happened so quickly nobody knows what happened.

“Her parents appeared after it had happened and comforted her. The ambulance arrived in about 15 minutes.

“The girl was nowhere near the road. She was on the grass next to the path on the corner of Baker Road and Allen Road.

“I think her name is Millie and she lives locally. Millie was not crying after it happened she just kept on repeating ’I don’t want to die’.”

The man said the lorry had not been there at 8.50am but appeared some time in the next hour.

He said: “The man had a full skip on board but I don’t know who has been doing any work around here on any of the buildings.”
