Man died in Mersey suicide plunge

Liverpool Pier Head

A MAN died after throwing himself from Liverpool’s Pier Head into the River Mersey today (Saturday).

The man, whose body has not yet been recovered, was seen on the edge of the Pier Head at around 3.30am.

Police tried to talk him down but he leapt into the cold water below. A brave officer went in after him but couldn’t save the man and had to be rescued himself.

Liverpool’s lifeboat team pulled the officer to safety but their search for the man was hampered by the dark.

A Liverpool Coastguard spokesman said: “All year around, the UK’s waters are lethal.”
