AN ELDERLY woman is believed to have had her legs amputated after being run over by a bus in Birkenhead.
The accident happened just before 11am today at the town’s bus station.
Unconfirmed reports have suggested the woman, who is in her 70s, has had to have her legs amputated.
The ambulance service said they had received “numerous calls” after the collision which occurred at a busy area of Birkenhead town centre.
North West Ambulance sent a trauma team from Arrowe Park Hospital in an ambulance to the scene, along with a rapid response vehicle.
The elderly woman was later taken to Arrowe Park Hospital.
The bus station was subsequently closed and a green tarpaulin erected against an Arriva bus, while police directed onlookers away from the scene.
The bus was stopped on a section of public road used by both cars and buses close to Birkenhead Market, while police were directing traffic away from and around the bus station.
