Man charged with Birkdale murder

A MAN has been charged with the murder of a father and attempting to kill his teenage son.

Michael O'Connor was stabbed in the head on Friday morning at his home in Conyers Avenue, Birkdale.

Police arrived to find the 59-year-old man inside bleeding heavily.

He was rushed to Southport general hospital where, despite the frantic efforts of doctors, he died an hour later.

Police arrested Robert Pennington, 44, of Walnut Street, Southport, and today he was charged with the murder of Mr O'Connor and the attempted murder of Mr O'Connor's 16-year-old son. 

Pennington is due to appear before South Sefton Magistrates' Court.
