Man charged with trying to kill his mother with a hammer

A WIRRAL man has made his first appearance in crown court today charged with the attempted hammer murder of his mother.

Andrew Ellis, 39, is alleged to have attacked his mother Elizabeth Ellis with the weapon as she slept in her bed.

She was taken to Arrowe Park hospital for treatment.

Ellis, of Downing Close, Prenton, appeared at Liverpool crown court via video-link from HMP Liverpool today charged with attempted murder.

Heavily-built and wearing glasses, he spoke only to confirm his name.

He was remanded in custody to re-appear at the court again on November 6 for a plea and case management hearing.

Judge John Roberts also set a trial date for January 26.
