Thousands disappointed by spider no-show

La Princess spider from La Machine at Echo arena

THOUSANDS of people crammed the Strand this morning to watch Liverpool’s giant spider “wake up”.

But the crowd, many of whom were children, were left disappointed and some voiced their anger after the 50ft arachnid failed to move.

A harpist was lifted into the air on a crane to play haunting music to the snow-covered giant mechanical creature, as crowds watch in anticipation at around 11.30am.

But as the music came to an end, the creature remained static.

Helen Marriage, of production company Artichoke, said: “People are welcome to continue coming to visit the spider having a little sleep.

“However we anticipate she won’t wake up until 3pm when she will go on a long walk for five hours around the city. Come and see her at the Cunard Building at 3pm or pick her up en-route.”
