Robert Pennington appears on murder charge

A MAN charged with the murder of his stepson’s father and the attempted murder of the teenage boy appeared at crown court for the first time today (TUES).

Robert Pennington, 44, is accused of murdering Michael O’Connor and the attempted murder of 16-year-old Liam O’Connor.

He made his first appearance at Liverpool crown court today (TUES) via video-link from HMP Manchester.

Wearing a grey suit, white shirt and tie, Pennington spoke only to confirm his name and confirm he could hear proceedings.

Pennington, of Walnut Street, Southport, kept his head bowed during the short hearing.

He entered no plea and was remanded in custody until November 18, when he is expected to enter a plea.

The Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Henry Globe QC, also fixed a provisional trial date for February 2.

Pennington is accused of stabbing Mr O’Connor to death in his home in Conyers Avenue, Birkdale, at about 8am on August 22.

It is understood Mr O’Connor suffered up to 30 knife wounds.

When police arrived, Mr O’Connor was bleeding heavily and he was taken to Southport general hospital.

He died an hour later from a stab wound to the head.

Pennington is then accused of turning the knife on Liam, who fled in fear for his life from the home he shared with his father.

Pennington was arrested near the scene.
