Giant bird escapes in Warrington

The public have been warned to look out for a giant bird which has escaped in Warrington.

The 5ft female adult Rhea, which has white feathers and large claws but is described by its owner as not aggressive, escaped from a property in Holcroft Lane in Culcheth.

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police said: "Police are asking residents and motorists in the Culcheth area to be aware of a Rhea, which is a big bird similar to an ostrich or an emu, that has escaped from a property on Holcroft Lane, Culcheth, last night.

"It stands approximately five foot tall and it has white feathers and big claws.

"The owner describes the bird as non-aggressive but we are asking people not to approach it."

A member of the public reported seeing the bird in a field near to the house but it has not yet been caught.

Anyone who spots the bird is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000 or the RSPCA.
