Six arrested over OAP hit-and-run death

Police at the scene of the incident in Cumber Lane,Whiston

SIX people were today being questioned over the hit-and-run death of a Merseyside pensioner.

Police made the arrests at a house in Cronton, Knowsley, this afternoon after 78-year-old Jimmy Rice was killed by a driver who failed to stop in Whiston yesterday.

The retired street cleaner was hit by a car on Cumber Lane, close to his home, at around 8.25pm. It is believed he was heading to catch a bus to Whiston Labour Club where he spent most nights enjoying a drink with friends.

A 63-year-old woman and five men, aged 62, 60, 40, 35 and 34, were all arrested at the same address on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

They were all set to be questioned by detectives throughout the day.

Police also recovered a Toyota Yaris from outside the house. It is currently undergoing forensic examination to see if it was the car involved in the incident.
