Two police officers were injured in a “sustained” attack by a group of around 10 people, their force said tonight.
The Lancashire police officers were kicked and punched when they tried to make an arrest in Skelmersdale, near Liverpool, early today.
The female sergeant and male Pc, who have not been named, had approached the group of men and women who were arguing in the street.
The five minute long assault began after they tried to arrest one of the men.
The officers suffered injuries to their faces from kicks and punches and have been sent home to recover.
The incident took place in Ennerdale, in the Tanhouse area of Skelmersdale, at around 12.20am today.
Inspector Peter Upton said: “Two uniformed police officers came across a group of about 10 people, both males and females, who were involved in a heated and loud exchange of words.
“The officers tried to arrest one of the males and during the struggle both officers were set on by the group and both officers received quite severe injuries to their faces from kicks and punches.
“The sustained attack went on for about five minutes and both officers are now off duty and the worse for wear for their experience.”
