Latvian man cleared of Southport cemetery rape - but found guilty of wounding with intent

“When she was seen by the two ladies in the early hours, 7am, on November 20, she was anything but. She was in a disorientated state, she was in a bloodied state, she was in a dishevelled state.”

The judge added the woman was “subdued and introverted” giving evidence at court.

But he told Holostovs, who was aided by an interpreter, he would only sentence him on the  verdicts of the jury.

He said: “In all the circumstances, I am bound to sentence you on the basis you reacted to the situation you found yourself in.”

Wearing an open-necked blue shirt and black trousers, Holostovs, of Forest Road, Southport, looked close to tears in the dock. His wife smiled and waved at him from the public gallery as he was led down.

Holostovs, who handed himself into Kent police after a media appeal to track him down, will be automatically deported from the UK following his sentence.
