A FATHER who lives in fear for his life, after being mistaken for murderer Jon Venables, has threatened Jack Straw with legal action.
The Justice Minister has been attacked for refusing to supply more information about why James Bulger’s killer, Venables, is back in prison.
But David Calvert, 27, is furious with Mr Straw for refusing to confirm he is not Venables. Mr Calvert has been on the run from vigilantes convinced he bludgeoned two-year-old James to death in 1993. Last week, thousands of people received texts and e-mails wrongly outing him as Venables’ new identity. A Facebook campaign was also launched claiming Mr Calvert is the child killer.
But the innocent father-of-four said: “Jack Straw could have said ‘his name’s not David Calvert’. It’s making people believe the name has been changed to David Calvert.
“I’m going to sue him – that’s my aim. He has made my life hell.
“I’m scared as hell. It hurts me. It’s destroying me.
“If they petrol bomb the house they could kill me, the kids and my wife.”
Giving evidence to a House of Commons committee yesterday, Mr Straw defended the decision to give both Venables and accomplice Robert Thompson new identities when they were released in 2001.
But he confirmed there would be a review of the handling of Venables’s case if the 27-year-old is charged with a further offence.
