POLICE launched an investigation after sick references to the murder of toddler James Bulger appeared on a social networking site.
Facebook users contacted Merseyside Police after a picture of James and abusive messages appeared on the site. A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm we are investigating following comments posted on a website relating to murder victim James Bulger.
The investigation is the result of a number of complaints from members of the public about inappropriate content on social networking site Facebook.
"Officers have spoken to the family of James and are currently in discussions with Facebook about the removal of this content."
Two-year-old James was abducted and murdered in February 1993 by friends Jon Venables and Robert Thompson. Earlier this month Venables was back behind bars after breaching the terms of his release from prison. It has been claimed that the 27-year-old is being investigated over child pornography allegations, but Justice secretary Jack Straw has refused to confirm details of his return to prison.
Mrs Fergus last night declined to comment on the site.
