SUPPORT JLR: Skills that could be lost forever

MARK CRAVEN, 45, from Maghull, considers himself “lucky” to have worked in most areas of the plant since he joined as an apprentice in 1980.

He is now a supervisor on the inspection line and makes sure that all cars pass rigorous testing, including the squeak-and-rattle route on the outdoor track and the water test.

He also checks the car matches the customer’s specifications before it leaves the factory.

“JLR is one of the few manufacturers left in the country that still have these facilities and if these skills are lost it’s not just to the local area but to the country as a whole, and I think the country will be much poorer.”
