Unions meet PM over car industry

UNION chiefs are meeting with the Prime Minister today to discuss saving the British car industry.

Tony Woodley, joint head of Unite, who was once hailed “The Saviour of Halewood” said he still believed the Government would help car workers.

The meeting comes after Business Secretary Peter Mandelson said that taxpayers could not afford to prop up jobs which “arguably have become redundant”. Mr Woodley, who has backed the Daily Post campaign to provide Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) with the support it needs, said he still believed the Government would help.

He said: “My argument with Mr Mandelson is that we have asked for short- term working instead of spending money on people on the dole.

“At my meeting with Mandelson, there were no negative vibes, and I’m looking forward to meeting the Prime Minister today.”
