50 jobs axed at biscuit factory

A BISCUIT factory which makes Christmas assortments has announced it is axing 50 jobs on December 22.

Burton Foods in Moreton have told workers they will lose their jobs three days before Christmas.

One employee, who did not want to be named, said: "Everyone's shocked. There are people who have mortgages and kids who are panicking in case they get forced out and they can't afford to go."

The company employs 1,300 people at the factory in Pasture Road.

Bosses said the factory was not closing and the company was trying to make itself more efficient.

Transport and General Workers Union official Tommy Potter said: "The union is working with the management to try and soften the blow."

A spokeswoman for Burton's said that although the workers would leave their posts on December 22, wages would continue until January 4.
