£5m city shopping centre extension

A LIVERPOOL shopping centre is to undergo a major extension.

Councillors yesterday granted permission for the refurbishment and expansion of Clayton Square shopping centre, which will be completed before Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008.

Last night, city leader Cllr Warren Bradley said the scheme was a vital part of the city’s rise as one of the UK’s leading retail centres.

He added: “The extension to Clayton Square will be an important addition to the city’s retail offer.”

The scheme will cost at least £5m and involve a two-storey addition in Clayton Square, to enable anchor store Boots to trade on a single-floor level.

It will mean a new store moving to the upper level currently occupied by Boots.

The main entrances to the precinct in Cases Street, Church Street and Elliot Street will also be altered, and the whole building will be refurbished.

Centre manager Ed Oliver said the approval of the council was “excellent news”.
