Kirkby's mini-Pentagon feeds the fishes in US

"We won the Boston contract through a relative and it works well. The systems we use mean that our clients can be anywhere in the world.

We keep an eye on the premises from a high-security point of view, but so advanced is our system that feeding the fish is no problem. We can even ensure the fish receive enough food by zooming in on the feeder," she said.

Mr Mahoney told how one client, working on high-powered cars for the rich and famous, was amazed when just three hours after Sampson installed its systems, two would-be burglars were caught in the act.

"From our control room in Kirkby, we were able to talk directly to police officers outside our client’s workshop in the West Midlands and direct them to the intruders.

"We use very special sensors that alert our operators when people approach premises or homes that we guard. It is a very sophisticated system," said Mr Mahoney. The vault has its own back-up and generator systems so that in an emergency, or if the premises were ever under siege, staff could survive for weeks.

Business consultant Chris Burgess, drafted in to help the company expand, said: "I thought I was going to visit a local security firm wanting to guard more work sites. But it was like something from a James Bond set, with people guarding premises from Merseyside and across the UK as well as overseas.

"Security has come a long way since uniformed men sat in cold wooden huts on a building site."

Sampson has celebrated its 10th anniversary by being awarded accreditation from the Security Industry Authority, making it an approved security contractor.

Later this year, it hopes to win an even higher gold standard from the National Security Inspectorate.
