Man killed as metal sheets fall from crane

The other cases involved cranes collapsing, including the one which crushed a Polish worker at a Liverpool city centre building site in January.

His 31-year-old colleague was also injured when the 120ft crane gave way. He was trapped in the crane cab for an hour while firefighters tried to free him.

Following the incident, companies across Merseyside were urged to check the safety of their cranes.

Last August, a 60-year-old man from Lymm, Cheshire, was carrying out maintenance work on street lights on Princess Way, in Seaforth, in a cherry picker when it collapsed and he plunged to his death.

Earlier that month, Ian Shacklady fell from the top of his cherry picker while pruning trees in the grounds of Saint Agnes’s Church, in Huyton, as his son watched from the ground as the accident happened.
