MERSEYSIDE Police today said they were 'high alert' following the double terrorist bomb threat in London.
Officers are conducting extra patrols near high-risk areas and transport networks across the city.
Security which was already tight at Liverpol John Lennon Airport had been increased before it was closed last night as police investigated a suspect vehicle parked there.
Airports appear to be a possible target after a burning Jeep was driven into Glasgow Airport on Saturday afternoon (see our national news section for the latest on this).
Assistant Chief Constable for Merseyside Police, Helen King, said the people of Merseyside should be assured there has been no specific threat to the area.
She said the force was working with fellow emergency services, carrying out targeted visits and patrols. These checks will continue for the “foreseeable” future, said ACC King.
She said: “Police forces nationally will be deploying high-visibility patrols near to potentially vulnerable areas and transport networks.
“In Merseyside, vulnerable areas include those where crowds tend to gather, so locations across the city centre will be particularly highly policed.
“These arrangements are ongoing, constantly reassessed, and each force tailors them to their own local circumstances, including the views and needs of specific communities.
“I’d like to reassure the public that these searches are precaut- ionary, and there is no specific threat to Mersey- side at this time. They are purely to help with ensuring the safety of the people of Merseyside.
“I’d ask anyone living or visiting the Merseyside area to be vigilant and report anything they believe to be suspicious, particularly any suspicious vehicles or unattended packages.”
A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust confirmed that they had been asked to be extra watchful for any suspicious activities.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: “In the case of any major incident, all the emergency services have tried-and-tested plans in place.”
Anyone who sees anything they believe to be suspicious should contact the police on 0151 709 6010 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
