Buddhist monks create – and destroy – a work of art for exhibition
TIBETAN Buddhist monks spent a week at World Museum Liverpool creating an intricate sand painting – and then set about destroying it.
The spiritual artwork – or mandala – was made up of millions of grains of coloured sand and created using small tubes, funnels and scrapers to position the sand.
The image produced at World Museum depicted a celestial mansion of the Buddhist deities.
Once completed, the mandala was destroyed and dispersed to symbolise the “impermanence of all that exists”.
Visitors were able to follow the creation of the mandala by monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery over the course of the past week, culminating in the artwork’s ceremonial destruction on Saturday.
