THE site of the current Royal Liverpool hospital could be used for a cutting-edge cancer research facility after its replacement opens in 2014.
Last night, hospital managers revealed talks were already taking place with development quango Liverpool Vision, the University of Liverpool and the city council about setting up a knowledge quarter.
The current Royal building dates from 1978 and is widely regarded as a monstrosity.
Even though the plans are part of the hospital’s strategic vision, managers said that it was vital to start planning the future.
It is possible it could house a cancer research facility run in conjunction with academics from the University of Liverpool.
Talib Yaseen, chief executive, said: “What we want to do is make the best use of the land for the public.”
