MP leads bid to save factory

WALLASEY MP Angela Eagle will today lead a delegation to meet the owners of the biscuit factory in Wirral threatened with mass redundancies.

Ms Eagle and union leaders will hold talks with venture capitalists Duke Street Capital to put forward alternative proposals to the planned near-closure of the Burton’s biscuit factory in Moreton with the loss of 821 jobs.

Labour’s Ms Eagle will be joined at the House of Commons meeting by trade union leader Tony Woodley, Steve Broomhead, chief executive of the North West Development Agency, and representatives from Wirral council who have come together with a plan to hopefully secure the future of the Moreton site.

Ms Eagle said: “A great deal of work has been done to secure this meeting.

“This is a positive development. I believe that this is a viable alternative plan and given the chance, could secure biscuit manufacturing at Burton’s.”

The meeting will take place between 3pm and 5pm.
