Suspect firework prompts full scale bomb alert

A POLICE spot check on a vehicle in Huyton led to a full-scale alert yesterday when a suspect device was discovered.

The incident began at 4.20pm in Liverpool Road, when a VW Bora was stopped outside a Territorial Army barracks.

On examining the car, police found a suspicious package and called in army bomb disposal experts.

The road between Bluebell Lane and Seth Powell Way was cordoned off while the package – which was later found to be a type of firework – was taken away for disposal.

The driver of the car, a 42-year-old man from Prescot, was last night in custody.

Police said the discovery was not terrorist-related.

The road where the incident took place is a three-lane dual carriageway, with a block of flats opposite.
