Vital £2.9m makeover is streets ahead

ONE of Liverpool’s most historic streets has picked up a prestigious national award following a £2.9m makeover.

The Hope Street Public Realm Improvement Project won the Highways category in this year’s Local Government News Street Design competition.

The project ran from summer 2005 to May 2006, with money saved on the main scheme being used to replace and improve an extra 20m of footpath on both sides of the Mount Pleasant junction, opposite the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Councillor Mike Storey, Liverpool’s executive member for regeneration, said: “The improvement of the Hope Street area was seen as vital because not only does it have a unique and cultural heritage, it has significant economic potential which was not being realised. We are delighted with the award.”
