A TEAM at Liverpool University is to take a leading part in an £11.5m national research programme to tackle animal diseases.

Professor Stuart Car-ter, of the university’s veterinary faculty, has been awarded £475,000 by the Bio-technology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to study digi-tal dermatitis in cattle, a main cause of lame-ness in cattle which has now spread to sheep.

Professor Nigel Brown, BBSRC director of science and techn-ology, said: “Diseases cost farmers and con-sumers huge amounts of money and cause real suffering. The projects are targeted at bringing world-class science to bear against some of the most damaging diseases.”
