VISITORS are being invited to follow in the footsteps of famous visitors including the Queen by taking a tour around Liverpool’s ornate Town Hall – but the exterior will not prove so impressive.
The interior of the land-mark building at the end of Castle Street boasts a beauti-ful blue and gold dome, 20,000-piece cut-glass crystal chande-lier and a large ballroom.
But on the day the tours start the frontage will still be partly obscured with mesh because of building work.
The historic building will open its doors to the public from Monday August 6 until Friday August 17.
Visitors will be able to see the ballroom where Her Majesty the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh sat down to lunch, and take in the many other features of the building.
A council spokesperson said: “The point of the tour is for people to take in the interior of the town hall.
“It is a shame the exterior work will not be finished in time but once it is people can see that everyday.”
Lord Mayor of Liverpool councillor Paul Clark said: “The Town Hall is so popular for civic events and everything from weddings to conferences that normally there’s too much going on for people to be able to take a really good look around.
“But I’m delighted that we’re now able to throw open its doors.
“It’s an amazing building, from the Council Chamber to the ballrooms, Hall of Remembrance and incredible blue and gold dome. It really is worth coming and taking a look at one of Liverpool’s most historic buildings in the city’s birthday year”.
