Jealous killer gets 16-year sentence

A WIDNES man who admitted he had killed because he was jealous has been sentenced to 16 years and eight months imprisonment for murder.

Stephen Paul Mottram, 40, of Frederick Street, pleaded guilty at Warrington Crown Court to the murder of Andrew Batterton.

Mr Batterton, known as Fatta, was killed in January when Mottram climbed into his home on Hale Road, Widnes, and stabbed him three times.

Mottram was arrested on suspicion of Mr Batterton’s murder and was charged on April 27.

In court, he revealed he was still infatuated with his former partner who had entered into a relationship with Mr Batterton.

Speaking after sentence, DCI Chris Ankers said: “This investigation has been difficult for everyone involved, particularly Mr Batterton’s family who have had to deal with months of distress and uncertainty.

“This was a particularly cold and calculated crime and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who worked on the case for their dedication and desire to see Fatta’s killer brought to justice – a fact recognised by the presiding judge who commended the actions of the investigation team. Hopefully, the lengthy sentence handed to Mottram will give Fatta’s family some sense of justice.”
