LIVERPOOL Coast-guards were called to help in an emergency 2,000 miles away.
Merseyside officers yesterday found them-selves alerting the Med-iterranean authorities after a yacht with 30 migrants got into diffi-culty near Malta.
Coastguard officer Ian Jackson said: “One of the occupants had a satellite phone, but the only person he could get in contact with was in Manchester. Man-chester Police in turn contacted us, and we were then able to alert the authorities in the Mediterranean who co-ordinated the operation with the Maltese Coastguard from there.”
