Schools holiday warning to parents

A MERSEYSIDE council has issued 20,000 letters to parents warning them of the dangers of taking children on holiday during term time.

St Helens council given the warning, as pupils broke up for the summer holidays, because almost 80,000 half days were lost across the borough last year through holidays being taken during the school term time.

Parents are being reminded that they do not have a right to take their children out of school on holidays except in exceptional circumstances. If parents take their children on holiday during school time every year then during their school life they will have missed up to half a year’s education.

The news comes two weeks after Liverpool City Council agreed to test a tough new regime on pupils due to start either primary or secondary school.

Cllr Shirley Evans, St Helens Council’s Executive Member for Children and Young People’s Services said: “

“We hope parents will support us as every school day matters”.
