AN ELDERLY woman was seriously injured when a gas explosion in her Wirral home blew the roof off the building on Saturday morning.

The woman, who lives in William Street, Seacombe, was said last night to be critically ill in Whiston Hospital.

Her home was so badly damaged it has now been demolished, according to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.

A spokesperson added the cause of the blast is still being investigated but was probably the result of a gas leak.

The woman was named locally as 90-year-old Adeline Davis, who lived alone with her cat.

The explosion happened at around 8.20am on Saturday. A number of houses in the street were evacuated.

The injured woman was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital before being transferred to the specialist burns unit.
