Recycling scheme stopped

THOUSANDS of households in Wirral who piloted the council’s combined food and garden waste recycling scheme are being asked not to put any more food in their brown bins.

As revealed in the Daily Post earlier this year the pilot scheme is being discontinued because the council says it has not provided Wirral with the recycling benefits they had hoped for.

David Green, director of technical services said: “We trialled the scheme for over a year, during all seasons, and the bottom line is not all residents liked the scheme and it hasn’t shown us a benefit.

“Wirral is committed to recycling and, in the areas where the pilot scheme was carried out, we have decided to concentrate on garden recycling. Residents can now feel assured that all of their garden waste is being recycled into compost from the change over date.”

All residents will receive new information, calendar and stickers for their bins so they know exactly when to stop adding food waste.

The trial included 17,500 householders in West Kirby, Heswall, Oxton, Prenton and Bebington.

EVERYONE in Wir- ral is also eligible for a low-cost home compost- er with free delivery.
