Famous tall ships sail in to grace Liverpool with a visit

TWO internationally-renowned tall ships sailed into Liverpool this weekend and the public were invited on board for guided tours.

The Bounty, used in the blockbuster film Pirates of the Caribbean starring Johnny Depp, and the Amistad, a replica of a a 19th-century slave ship, docked in the city yesterday.

The Bounty – renamed the Black Pearl in the film –  docked at the South Quay of Canning half-tide dock, facing the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

She was originally built for the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty, starring Marlon Brando, and tours feature costumed characters from the two famous films.

The 91ft-long tall ship is making a world tour to help raise funds for the Cutty Sark which was damaged by fire on May 21 this year.

The Amistad is due in today on its world-wide Amistad Atlantic Freedom Tour, to retrace the infamous slave trade triangle.

Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott MP will be on board with youngsters who have helped sail the ship.

The public are also invited to pre-book for a lecture about the spirit of the Amistad and the African Renaissance, by Professor Alfred Zack-Williams, who is Professor of Sociology University of Central Lancashire, and President of the African Studies Association of the United Kingdom.
