WIRRAL’S ruling cabinet has overruled its highways experts to leave the door open for more residents’ parking schemes in future.
The authority was advised by technical services officers to scrap future schemes after consultation for residents parking in seven areas across the borough were overwhelmingly rejected.
Householders and businesses objected to the introduction of the parking restrictions leading officers to recommend no similar schemes be attempted in future and existing applications for them be abandoned.
But a meeting of Wirral Council’s Cabinet agreed to an amendment by Liberal Democrat Jean Quinn, cabinet member for Streetscene, to at least allow the possibility of them in future.
However, any requests for their introduction must meet the minimum criteria of 80% agreement from 300 households.
Cllr Quinn said: “Although the response to the pilot schemes was so negative, I would still like to leave open the option of residents’ parking where it’s appropriate.”
