Vandals wreck woodland

Vandal attack on trees in Syders Grove Community Wood, Sugar Lane, Knowsley Village

VANDALS using stolen chainsaws chopped down almost 50 trees in Merseyside.

An area the size of a tennis court was cleared of 45 young and semi-mature trees in Knowsley Village.

Police were hunting the vandals, who also hacked down a 70-year-old sycamore.

The trees were felled between Sugar Lane and Frederick Lunt Avenue.

Barry Fletcher, chair of the Friends of Knowsley Village Woodlands, said: “Not only is this unsightly and totally unacceptable in terms of public safety, but it will have a significant impact on woodland wildlife.”

Knowsley council hopes to re-plant later in the year.
