Thousands expected at RNLI fundraiser
SPECTACULAR displays planned for this year’s Lifeboat Open Day are expected to wow the crowds at Hoylake.
Organisers of West Kirby and Hoylake’s Lifeboat Open Day say this year’s display is set to be bigger and better than ever with the addition of new display teams.
The popular annual event being held today is expected to draw tens of thousands to Hoylake Promenade to see returning favourites the Red Arrows who will be joined by newcomers the Dynamic Blue Eagles who will be showcasing their helicopter display.
Visitors to the event, which is in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, will also see an array of microlights from Ince Blundell land on the beach in front of the Lifeboat Station.
Last year, more than 30,000 people flocked to the promenade, and over £27,000 was raised for the RNLI.
Admission to the event is free and visitors will also be able to enjoy events and attractions including beach tennis, stalls, a children’s funfair, a Red Arrows simulator and a trip aboard the lifeboat for a tour around the area. Traffic is expected to be heavy around the display times and visitors to the event are being warned to arrive early to avoid parking problems and congestion. Day-trippers can also travel in by train through Hoylake Station, which is a five-minute walk from the event.
Organiser Carole Jackson said: “We are hoping for record crowds this year. It is the first time that the Blue Eagles have displayed at the event, and there will be an opportunity for the public to meet with the helicopter pilots in between shows. The Red Arrows are always a favourite with the public, and we are looking forward to seeing their new 2007 display.'
Organisers will be fundraising on the day for the RNLI, which is funded by voluntary contrib- utions. The public is requested to give generously to the many crew and volunteers who will be “shaking their buckets” on the day. Hoylake Lifeboat Station also receives sponsorship from Wirral Council, Typhoo and from the stall holders and caterers.
The first Blue Eagles’ helicopter display is scheduled for noon and will be followed by a second at 2pm. The Red Arrows will begin at 3pm.
