Counting the fans for scaled down festival

ATTENDANCE figures for this year’s scaled down Mathew Street Festival are to be announced today.

The final tally for the number of people who went to events on the Monday are yet to be revealed, but those for the Sunday, which generally gets fewer crowds than the Monday, were similar to previous years at around 60,000.

Jason Harborow, Chief executive of the Culture Company, last night said officials had been concentrating on making the 800th birthday celebrations a success.

Last night Cllr Warren Bradley said he was on duty in his day job as a firefighter but he had passed through the city and it was “bouncing”.

“I think it went really well all things considered.

“I just want to thank all the bars, clubs and restaurants that helped stage events. Their response was tremendous.”

He said venues had already expressed interest in putting on bands next year.

“We are working away now to make sure that next year we do have outside stages,” he added.
