Historic buildings open free

DOZENS of historic properties in Merseyside and Cheshire will open their doors for free entry next month.

From a behind-the-scenes viewing of the George’s Dock Ventilation Station in Liverpool to a visit to a lighthouse in Wallasey, people will have the chance to explore fascinating buildings, many of them normally closed to the public.

The four-day event takes place from Thursday, September 6, to the following Sunday. It is co-ordinated by the Civic Trust with support from English Heritage and an army of 30,000 volunteers.

Highlights include a visit to the George Dock Ventilation Station for Queensway Tunnel, a guided nature walk along Eastham Heritage Trail, and a tour of 17 William Morris windows, some newly restored, and a Henry Willis organ at St Nicholas’s Church, in Liverpool.
