Coastguard in rescue drama

A DRAMATIC rescue was launched by Merseyside’s Coastguard after a man became stuck in sinking mud 100 metres offshore in New Brighton.

Police saw he was sinking while monitoring CCTV cameras that looked out over Egremont.

Officers called the Coastguards shortly before midnight and their specialist mud rescue team from Hoylake was launched.

A spokesman for the Coastguards said: “We were called to the shore close to the Town Hall and Egremont Ferry Pub where a man had got stuck past his knees in mud.

“He was very lucky that police had seen what was happening to him on their CCTV cameras and alerted us.

“It was also fortunate that it was low water at the time.

“He was freed by our team and an ambulance was then called.

“He was taken to hospital for a check-up, as obviously being stuck in the mud had been a very frightening experience.”
