Southport man hailed World Champion of... black pudding throwing

A SOUTHPORT lorry driver emerged as the victor in the annual World Black Pudding Throwing championship held in the village of Ramsbottom, near Bury.

Paul Rudge, 41, managed to beat off contestants from as far afield as Africa, the USA, Poland and Turkey to win the title at the weekend.

The aim of the game is to use a black pudding to knock as many Yorkshire puddings off a wooden platform, 20ft up the side of a pub wall, as possible.

Mr Rudge managed to knock down four of the pud- dings, which was enough to win him the world champ- ionship. His prize was £100, a medallion and a trophy. He said: “I was born in Ramsbottom and I attend the competition every year.

“I’ll definitely be going back next year to defend my title.”

All the money raised goes to charity.
