Wright helps direct Pilot Boat to safe cup passage

MIXED fortunes befell league clubs in the Wirral FA Amateur Cup first round as only four clubs progressed into the next round.

In an incident-packed game Pilot Boat were thankful of the direction given by their strikers as Peter Wright, Simon McDonald and Phil Welsh notched the goals to beat Sir Robert 3-2.

Townfield did likewise as goal hero Kevin Williamson banged home four goals, with Richard Aspey adding a single in their 5-4 success over fellow leaguers Rose & Crown, who had Steve Egan a three-goal marksman and Lee Dermody completed the scoring. Both Oyster Catcher and Queens FC received walk-overs to round two.

In the Wirral FA Junior Cup first round, a single strike from Paul Spencer gave Turnberrys a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Acorn FC, but Farmers Arms could not reap the benefits of an Andrew Clark goal and lost out 3-1 to New Ferry.

Division Two action saw only two games with Liscard Bronze claiming top spot following their 11-2 demolition of Stanleys Cask, in which John Pringle netted six times and Danny Banicaley twice in a great team effort. FC Victoria had Danny Holdsworth as a three-time scorer and Gary Francis added the fourth as they beat newcomers Leasowe Alliance 4-0 to put them into third place, but having played more games than anyone else.

The only fixture in the Premier Division ended with The Office sinking Egremont Ferry 4-1, thanks to Len Hammond, Alex Savage, Steve Mole and Craig Smith all netting singles. The fixture between Poulton Royal and Ship FC was abandoned due to a broken leg incident just after half-time.
